Introduction: The “Health in Colors” project, developed by medical students from a private institution in Belo Horizonte in the Public Health Practice II discipline, is based on the precept of the importance of health education as a way of promoting health. The action is based on the principle of educating the population about the main diseases that affect the community, considering the campaign months established by health reference bodies, which take into account thematic colors for each month. The illnesses considered relevant and worked on with the community were: tuberculosis, high blood pressure and sexually transmitted infections. Objective: To report the experience of health education carried out by medical students in a health center using the months of the year and their theme and color to establish a dialogue with the user of the health system. Experience story: Users were approached in the waiting room, with the distribution of leaflets and educational messages, together with the decoration of the Basic Health Unit (UBS). In some of these actions, in addition to promoting health education, rapid tests for sexually transmitted infections were carried out, aiming at detection, timely treatment and consequent reduction in the transmission of these diseases in the community. There was an increase in the population's awareness of local health problems, with residents seeking more information and actively participating in the proposed activities. Final considerations: It is recommended that similar projects be implemented in other UBSs and regions, with more precise assessments to scientifically support the impact on the population's health.
