Health promotion and oral health prevention for institutionalized elderly people in Belo Horizonte

Introduction: Population aging and the increasing institutionalization of older adults have intensified the demand for systematized oral health promotion actions in Long-Term Care Facilities for Older Adults (LTCFs). In this context, university extension programs emerge as a relevant strategy to address gaps in healthcare assistance and to promote critical training in public health. Objective: To report and critically analyze the extension experience of the Academic League of Oral Rehabilitation (LARO) in the development of oral health promotion and prevention actions aimed at institutionalized older adults and their caregivers in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Experience Report: Between May and December 2025, 23 activities were carried out in seven private Long-Term Care Facilities for Older Adults (LTCFs), conducted by 26 dental students and involving 90 older adults and 60 caregivers. Playful methodologies, such as music-based activities, painting, and bingo, promoted greater engagement when compared to traditional lecture-based approaches, resulting in lower resistance and higher participation. Caregivers demonstrated greater adherence to content with practical applicability, such as denture hygiene. However, behavioral changes could not be measured due to the absence of longitudinal assessment instruments. Cognitive limitations among some residents, initial resistance, and reports of harassment highlighted the need for ethical and socioemotional training. Final Considerations: Extension activities in Long-Term Care Facilities for Older Adults (LTCFs) demonstrate the potential to expand access to oral health education, strengthen institutional bonds, and contribute to the development of humanized competencies. However, the absence of pre- and post-intervention assessment instruments limits the measurement of impacts, highlighting the importance of implementing evaluation protocols in future experiences.
